Alma-Tadema was born the son of a notary in 1836.
He entered the Antwerp Academy in 1852 where he studied art until 1858.
Married in 1863, on honeymoon in Italy where he discovered the ancient Roman
ruins.
The Roman culture became the subject of many paintings.
After the death of his wife in 1869, Alma-Tedema settled in London to continue
his work.
His theatrical manner of painting the ancient world earned him a good deal
of money in both England and America.
He died at the age of 76 in 1912.
